Ancient Greek

Ancient Greek

Ancient Greek focuses on the understanding and appreciation of the Greek language, culture and civilisation during the classical period.

The current syllabus is offered at two levels, Ordinary and Higher. At Higher level, however, students will be required to have reached a higher level of attainment in translation of prescribed and unprescribed Greek, and in Greek Composition, Grammar and Comprehension.

Junior Certificate Ancient Greek is assessed at the end of third year at both levels by written examination.

Note: A revised specification that combines the current junior cycle subjects of Latin, Ancient Greek and Classical Studies into a single subject called Classics will be taken by first year students from September 2019.

The new junior cycle classics specification is available here.
