Subject Overview:

Leaving Certificate Latin is mainly concerned with the study of the Latin language, the reading of a selection of Classical Latin authors and the study of Roman History, Art and Literature.

Content

Leaving Certificate Latin may be taken at either Higher or Ordinary level. Ordinary level students are not required to read as many Latin authors for the unprescribed section of the course.

The course comprises the following sections:
Composition (translation into Latin) or Comprehension (answering questions in English or Irish about a passage of Latin).

Unprescribed Translation.
Prescribed Translation
Grammar
Roman History, Art, Architecture and Literature

Assessment

Assessment is by a terminal examination paper examination. There are separate papers for Ordinary level and Higher level.

Current status

The syllabus for Junior Certificate Latin is currently under review by NCCA.
